One simple technique to vary your basslines is to play a pedal point, either on the first or fifth step of the key. Here is a bassline that uses this technique altogether too often, but demonstrates each of these pedal points.

Note that the use of the pedal tones allows you to play across the bar lines when you want, making for a more syncopated line.
