When I first started playing bass (not that long ago!) I thought funk tunes always had to have complex rhythms with lots of syncopation. But sometimes great funky sounding basslines have an eighth note feel, similar to rock or pop tunes.

Check out this first section of a bass line to a popular funky song. I'm sure you'll probably recognize the tune when you give it a listen. Amazing how thoroughly it grooves, using just straight eighth notes.
