Single String Fretless Intonation

by Ian Hunter (492)

Pages: 1 2 Suggested Tempo: 100

This cool excersise is a variation on some ideas that Steve Bailey and Jimmy Johnson use when playing fretless bass. The idea is to play each note cleanly and evenly, despite the shifting. The shifting will allow you to get used to moving around the length of the neck and also will show you how to get into different positions without getting lost. These are both in the key of E minor, but should be done in all keys and all areas of the neck from top to bottom, regardless of what note comes first. The shift comes when moving between thirds. When playing the notes, first play them staccato, then slide from one note to the next, keeping the shift clean at the same time, and of course, watching the intonation.
