Amazing Grace

by Evan Donovan (1339)

Pages: 1 Suggested Tempo: 100

Not only is this a great melody, it is also a good way to learn the mixolydian scale because the highest and lowest in the melody are both D. D mixolydian is the fifth mode in the key of G major. The chart shows what it looks like.

The phrasing sounds wrong on this page because the song is supposed to be in 3/4. When you play it, try to sing along. Hopefully, this will help you get it sounding more like it should, as well as giving you practice playing other things on the bass besides bass lines.

The second sequence is my attempt at harmonizing the melody. I tried to think more in terms of counterpoint than in terms of outlining the chords because practically the whole melody could be harmonized with G Major or G Major 7. A technical thing I had never noticed before is that the melody breaks down into 4 phrases. The first is amazing...sound, the second that...me, the third I...found, and the fourth was...see, and the meter is 4 measures, 3 measures, 4 measures, 3 measures. The second phrase and the fourth phrase are identical except for the last note in each. In the second phrase it's a D, the dominant step, but in the fourth, it's a G, the tonic, which would make sense because it is the resolution.

Well, anyway enjoy the melody.
