Jazz Bass Building Blocks

Intro

I started this course to offer lessons that will help you memorize the basics of Bass vocabulary, increase your comfort with the fretboard, and offer you insights on how to improvise.

I played bass for several years before really understanding how to approach an improvised line. I could play fairly complicated lines, but I still wasn't progressing in gaining the knowledge necessary to improvise freely. This course will attempt to summarize the essentials you need to know to start speaking on your bass.

Music is a language, and like any language, you need to learn words before you can assemble them into sentences. The first section of this course will concentrate on memorizing those words -- the modes of the major and minor scales.

In later sections, we'll dissect bass lines and relate them to the building blocks we learned at the beginning of the course.

This course will be a work in progress. I didn't want to write it entirely before starting to publish the first sections. It will be modified regularly, so if you are following along, check back. I encourage you to offer me feedback -- positive And negative :-) -- and I'll use the feedback to improve this course.

I'll use the remaining part of this lesson to offer an index of lessons as they are published. Check back here regularly to see what was added.
