Crazy Punk Lines

by Jfason Pfries (11)

Pages: 1 Suggested Tempo: 150

Naturally punk musicians have no tallent, they play fast and loud and writing lyrics about stuff that doesn't matter. I should know I am in a punk band. In punk bands bassists can really shine because while your guitarist and drummer are/is play fast and shouting out unpolitically correct lyrics usually you the bassist will by the guy or gal that has the most room to improvise. Punk guitars most often use power chords, or chords that are neither major nor minor. That means you have almost total freedom to play whatever your heart desires. Defining thirds in the chords is one way I have found of make a moving bassline stand out. It usually helps knowning the key that the song is played in, major and minor feels of different scale steps, and the 7 church modes when writing a bass line.
A Major
This is an example from a song that my band Chairman Lau plays, it's not exactley the same because the line creator doesn't have the triplet timing but it's close and you get the general idea. The chord progression is B A E A D B E D G A E D A B E F# D E D. This is actually the intro, verse, chorus, and bridge crammed into one.
