Just Learning How To Slap

by Chuck Howard (5439)

Pages: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Suggested Tempo: 120

This lesson is built for those who are just learning or would like to learn how to utilize the slap/pop technique.

First things first. How to hold your picking hand (the technique taught in this lesson is what is comfortable for me and may be accomplished differently by other musicians).

Slapping:

With your picking hand, make a thumbs up sign. Place your thumb so that it is parallel with the string you want to slap. Twist your wrist (try not to move your arm, it's all in your writsts) back so that you are looking at your palm. Now hit the string with the side of your thmumb and quickly release your thumb from the string so that you get the right amount of sustain (think of it as snapping your thumb at the string).

This segment of the lesson focuses on your Slap technique. Try and become comfortable with slapping on every string and using several different rhythms.

Sometimes it can become irritating when trying to slap because you hit strings that you don't want to hit. Try hard to only slap the string that you intend on slapping. This technique can become confusing and frustrating, but try not to let it get to you. Remember, it's almost like learning the bass over again since it's a brand new technique. Be patient and keep playing it until you feel comfortable.
