This is the standard square I use, using 2 strings for the main and thick of it. 1,3-1,3. And then, sliding that same finger (should be the ring finger for best speed) to the 5th fret and then using the pointer finger to land on the next 3rd fret. Then the last fifth. To do this in reverse, just reverse the pattern and slide with the pointer finger instead of the ring. This pattern can be used off of any bass note, and if used correctly, it becomes a speedy improv tool. Especially with hammer-ons
Alternatively, you can use it without the slides in the same hand position, but be weary of what key you are playing with. If you use this and land on a wrong note, its because you followed the pattern in a wrong key, but for most songs/applications, this should work. And with practice, it will become a lightning fast fret trick to get you out of an improvising jam
