Fingers Vs. Pick

by Steve Rosenka (423)

Pages: 1 Suggested Tempo: 120

I have been thinking back on my previous lessons and I've realised that in regards to right hand technique, all I've mentioned is fingerstyle.

Now there are some bass players who will swear that using the fingers is the ONLY way to go. They say it gives them more touch with their instrument. There are others who will say that using a pick is the ONLY way to go. I say that works great. For them. I personally use both methods. Fingerstyle for the touch and because of the fact that there's only ONE pick but TWO or THREE fingers.

There are pieces of music that I couldn't or wouldn't play with a pick. There are also songs that require a pick. There's a certain sound and attack with a pick that you just won't get with your fingers. Now,I'm not knocking fingerstyle or pick purists. I'm just saying whatever works for YOU is what you should use. Try both techniques in different songs. You may, like me, choose one over the other in a particular song, or even part of a song.

You don't have to be fanatical one way or the other. Fingers and picks are both just tools that we have at our disposal. If one works, great. If it doesn't,use the other. Make up your own mind as to what's comfortable for YOU in any given situation.

Having said that, The next lesson will be on Intervals and we'll be playing our first 2-octave scale. 'Til then, continue learning, practice consistently, and HAVE FUN!!
