In a progression of chords that move around in fourths (as they do in "Autumn Leaves" it's easy to base a line entirely around chord tones, resolving thirds to sevenths or vice versa, as illustrated here. Notice that this doesn't happen on EVERY chord; sometimes it IS best to start off with the root!
