5-string Warm-up (cont.)

by Steve Rosenka (423)

Pages: 1 Suggested Tempo: 120

As you'll recall, in the previous lesson, we started with the 1st finger,1 finger per fret, sounding each dropping a string, etc., playing to the 7th fret and back. These variations are a little more challenging and ambitious.

Again,1 finger per fret starting on the B string. Set your metronome at a comfortable pace. This time, instead of starting with the 1st finger, start with the 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, then 1st. Drop down a string til you reach the G, the work back up. Take this excercise to the 7th fret as before.

When you get comfortable with that start with the 3rd finger, then 4th,then 1st,then second. Then try 4th,1st,2nd,3rd. Some of these might seem a little hard at first. BE PATIENT.

These excercises will develop left hand finger coordination. Work slowly, sounding each note cleanly. If you're going too fast and just making a mess, you're losing the object of the excercises.

Try to do these excercises for at least 15 minutes a day. It's important that you practice cosistently. It's much more beneficial to practice 1 hour every day than 3 hours every third day. Break your hour down to, say, 15 minutes for warm-ups, 15 minutes for scales (we'll get to them, I promise), 15 minutes for songs and another 15 minutes for warm-ups.

So remember, have patience, have faith and most importantly HAVE FUN!! We play for the love of making music, after all, don't we? If you have any questions or suggestions please leave a message or E-Mail me at rosenhart71@earthlink.net.I'll see you next time and Happy Playing!! -Steve
