An Other Left Hand Drill

by FRANCIS LOPEZ (265)

Pages: 1 2 Suggested Tempo: 60

As usual start the exercice with a low tempo (I suggest 60 or less) and increase it as you become confortable (with both hands).

Remember that left hand fingers are numbered as follow : 1 for index, 2 for middle finger, 3 for ring finger and 4 for tiny finger.

Also you shall use one finger per fret (if you are in fifth position, meaning fifth fret, finger 1 is against 5th fret, finger 2 against 6th fret, finger 3 against 7th fret and finger 4 against 8th fret).

During this exercice you shall also have only one finger in contact with the fingerboard (others fingers shall be up).

This kind of exercice can be found tedious so work with only one sequence at a time (for example monday I work with sequence 1, wednesday with sequence 4, ...)

I have written the exercice with eigth notes, but you can imagine mixing any type of notes of course.

Here are the 24 sequences which can be applied with your left hand :

1st sequence 1 2 3 4 -- 7th sequence 2 1 3 4 -- 13th sequence 3 1 2 4 -- 19th sequence 4 1 2 3

2nd sequence 1 2 4 3 -- 8th sequence 2 1 4 3 -- 14th sequence 3 1 4 2 -- 20th sequence 4 1 3 2

3rd sequence 1 3 2 4 -- 9th sequence 2 3 1 4 -- 15th sequence 3 2 1 4 -- 21st sequence 4 2 1 3

4th sequence 1 3 4 2 -- 10th sequence 2 3 4 1 -- 16th sequence 3 2 4 1 -- 22nd sequence 4 2 3 1

5th sequence 1 4 2 3 -- 11th sequence 2 4 1 3 -- 17th sequence 3 4 1 2 -- 23rd sequence 4 3 1 2

6th sequence 1 4 3 2 -- 12th sequence 2 4 3 1 -- 18th sequence 3 4 2 1 -- 24th sequence 4 3 2 1

Here below is the 1st sequence, I have choosen position 5, but you can select any position along the fingerboard.

Feel free to e-mail me if you are in trouble.

Main benefits of this drill are improvement of switching from one string to the other (you shall practice up and down across the strings of course), left hand fingers independence and skill, position accuracy, fingers stretching.
