This groove, over which I lead into the song as an intro and a "re-intro" after the bass/flute solo, is the same groove I sing over with Shoshana. It is played over a straight 4/4 beat in order to provide contrast. Generally I use a pick on this, emphasizing the downstrokes, similar to a hard rock style of picking. During the verse this passage is played twice, with an extra two times added as the intros to verse 1 and 3. After all verses it is followed by the bridge #1.
