Greetings and top of the day, fellow low-enders! I was recently called to sub at a church for the ailing bass player and I learned something that I wanted to pass on to you. We all complain occasionally that guitarists tend to overplay, but I have learned in many years that we also have the same tendency. We have to remember, though, that worship music is not about our skills. It is simply about creating a media through which the audience can worship.
To do this, we must remember to play appropriate styles. Your worship team leader is your best source of information as what needs to be played. He/she is the one you should coordinate with to determine what is best. I am simply offering some years of experience to help you avoid the common traps that we all fall for sometimes.
The following groove is of a common chord progression we all encounter in modern worship music. Using this one chord progression, I will add various bass grooves to change the texture of the music. That way you will be able to get a feel for how much of a difference the right bass line makes.
