This lesson will boost your knowledge of the neck and let you have fun accompanying the melody. I listed it as "intermediate" so that players just starting out wouldn't look at it and be intimidated, but if you have a good knowledge of where the notes are, this lesson will solidify your skills.
Refer to the Miscellaneous Notes on the last page for additional information.
The tempo is the suggested performance tempo; it should be slowed while learning the part.
Note: the following suggestions for hand placement are what I worked out over time after experimenting with several different ways to play this bass line. I use 1-finger-per-fret hand position which means extensive use of the pinky finger in this piece. Please feel free to work out what works best for you.
The first five measures are played entirely within the position starting with the first finger on the second fret.
At measure 6, shift your hand so the first finger is on the 4th fret.
At measure 8, shift your hand so that the first finger is on the 6th fret on the second note of the measure.
At measure 9, shift your hand so that the first finger is on the 7th fret. Stretch to reach the 11th fret with the pinky (interval of a major third).
At measure 10, 1st finger is on 6th fret.
At measure 12, do the octave jump down to the 9th fret on the E string with the first finger. The interval jumps for the remainder of this section can be fingered many ways; I'm sure I don't do it the same way twice. Work out what is best for you here.
