Basic Patterns For Beginners

Bass

The following is a look at basic forms. These are forms that I was taught by my second bass teacher; Larry Stanley. He was a firm believer in getting his students ready to play right away so he did not attempt to teach sight reading immediately. He simply taught me these few patterns and we got into reading later.

There is no real, deep, zen-like method to these forms. They are simply a reference point. It is up to you to make the patterns and decide the order of notes in each. I am lousy at theory and really only know the difference between majors and minors. All I know is that these forms have voices that say "blues" to me.

I will show you each form and give you an example of how I've played them. From there you are on you own. Remember to be creative and move these around the fretboard. They work well in a I-IV-V progression.

Having said that, on to page two----->>>
