Hello, fellow bassfolks (or is it "Folk Bass")!
Sorry about the delay, it's been a bit busy here in NYC!
I just reviewed some of the grooves we've covered, and I realized, to my utter astonishment, that we've never covered the king of session players...James Jamerson! This cat is the father of modern electric bass and played on more number-one hits than Elvis, the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones...COMBINED!!! James was part of the famous Motown session band "The Funk Brothers," a truly legendary group of musicians. Check out "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" on DVD, or the book with transcriptions. It's a must-see for any electric bassist (in any style)!
A great example of his work is Gladys Knight's version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" or Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life."
Check out this cool groove in the style of James Jamerson, and do it slowly at first. It's a good one!
