Bass Groove Of The Week #44

by Patrick Pfeiffer (10693)

Pages: 1 Suggested Tempo: 90

Top of the week to all those who try to stay out of treble!

Once again, it's time for the bass groove of the week (do I hear cheering in the arena...?)! This week it's a little something for the Bluesers amongst us!

One of the most played blues songs on any band stand is a little tune made famous by the Allman brothers, called "Stormy Monday," and it's a gem! The bassist for the Allman brothers band was Berry Oakley, and this was at a time when it wasn't safe to be in that band...(motorcycles, drugs,...early exit...darn!). However, Barry left quite a legacy of cool bass grooves on numerous recordings, and he's well worth checking out. "Live at Fillmore East" is kind of required listening for any blues bassist.

Without further ado, please allow me to present a bass groove in the style of the late Berry Oakley. Enjoy!

SETTINGS:

Tempo: 90
(it's kind of hard to get a handle on this one...to get the AB system to play triplets, we use three measures in the place of two, so the tempo is actually a third slower, bringing it down to 60)

Sound: Elec Fing (could be pick, too)

Click: Start (Just to make the groove sound better on the computer...don't listen to the click for tempo, it'll have nothing to do with the actual tempo of the groove...triplets, you know!)

Loop: 4 times

Groove Skeleton: Triplets (Quarter note triplet followed by 8th note triplet)

Tonality: Dominant (Mixolydian)

Style: Blues

Oh, yeah! I can feel the blues...! Ok, have fun with this, and I'll see you next week for the newest installment (and it's a cool one!). Be well, and happy grooving!

Peace,

Patrick
