Top of the week, fellow low-riders!
This week we're continuing with our "in the style of" series of great bass players. One of the numerous unsung heroes of bass is a wonderful session player named Tommy Cogbill. Unfortunately, he died very young (in his fourties), but he left behind a wealth of bass grooves that keep inspiring musicians everywhere. He's the cat who played on Aretha Franklin's "Respect" (just one of many examples), and if you listen to the bass line, it's really cool without getting into the way, a masterpiece!
Look him up and check out some of his work when you have the chance (and the time...it's pretty impressive both in quality and volume!).
This week's groove demonstrates Tommy's style, the alternating busy part with the less busy syncopations. Start the groove with your pinkie on the 8th fret of the A-string to keep it in position, and to avoid using open strings. Enjoy!
