Very Easy Jazz Walking

by Rick Taylor (1367)

Pages: 1 Suggested Tempo: 120

This lesson illustrates how to create a simple but effective walking bass line over a bog standard G, Em, C, D chord progression. Every time the chord changes then the root note of the chord is played on beat one to emphasis the new chord. Beats 2 and 3 are usually chord tones, and beat 4 is usually an approach tone. If you analysis the chord tones then these are usually 3rd's (major 3rd's for major chords and minor 3rd's for minor chords) and 5th's as these are the safest bet for straight major and minor chords, although others are used. For an easy melodic feel, don't make large interval jumps and don't use to many chromatics. For best results use a tempo of about 120 bpm and an acoustic bass sound.
