Ok..here we are, now this is absoloute basics of slap..so please if you know this go on to next page.
Slap is somthing that developed on the double bass but was only really pioneered on the electric. The most noticable bassist who did this was Larry Graham (Sly and the family stone & Graham central records). Graham developed boogie lines which had a swing feel, he added the octave 'pop' and so slap and pop was born.
The slapping part of this should be done with your arm almost parrallel to the strings, with your hand closed and thumb sticking out. The 'slap' itself should be done with the side of the thumb that faces inward to your body and you should make contact with the middle of the thumb, the hard boney bit..not the end of your thumb..this should 'slap' the ghost/last fret on your bass. When you close your hand your index finger should be closed in just underneath either the D or G and you 'pop' by pulling that string off the fretboard and releasing, letting it 'pop' back against the fretboard.
Below are some starter exercises for you. BAR 1 is a chance for you to just slap each string..all four, slapping should not be confined to just the E and A strings. you should practise slapping all the strings until you have a clear concise contact producing a clear and clean sound....practise this for as long as it takes and mix up the order so you know you can jump from the E to the D or G to E................... BAR'S 2 - 8. This is practise at slapping and popping the octave. Work your way up the E string then up the A string slapping and popping...practise this slow at first and build speed............BAR'S 9 - 12. As before but this time practise slap slap pop. Do the same as the single slap exercise and work all the way up the E and all the way up the A..i just couldn't be bothered to put all that in again. Keep practising until you can do it smoothly and cleanley. Now go to page 2. |
