Help: Interactive MIDI Sound Test

WARNING: ActiveBass has determined that you have 'cookies' DISABLED in your Web browser. You will NOT be able to properly listen to our musical examples if cookies are disabled in your browser's preferences. If this is the case, please enable them, and re-enter the site

This page will help configure your browser to hear the musical examples on the site. Run through the checklist below to help diagnose any sound problems you may be having.

• If you cannot hear sound at all, then continue with the checklist below.
• If you can hear sound, but your playback is not customizable, click here.

NOTE: Sound at ActiveBass is designed for standard installations of Netscape Navigator 4.x and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x/5.x for Windows and Macintosh. If this does not match your operating system and browser, then we cannot offer any support or guidance in helping you resolve your sound issues. Also note that Shockwave is not required to hear sound at ActiveBass.

0. The URL for This Site MUST Be www.activebass.com
Look at the URL for this site in your browser address window. The beginning of the URL must read http://www.activebass.com, and NOT http://activebass.com. If you do not have the leading "www" in front of the ActiveBass domain, script errors will occur. The reasons for this are not worth getting into.

Click here to re-enter the site with the proper URL.

1. Your Master Volume and MIDI Volume MUST Be Turned Up
Most computers have a master volume, which controls all sound output, and a MIDI volume. Both these parameters must be turned up high enough for you to hear sound at ActiveBass.

Click Here to Learn How to Check Your Volume Levels

• If you have a Windows computer and it does not have a volume level for MIDI, then it is probable that you do not have a MIDI-enabled soundcard, and thus will not be able to hear sound at ActiveBass.

2. Internet Explorer Users: Make Sure Sound is Enabled
If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, there is a menu option under:
View->Internet Options->Advanced called Play Sounds. Make sure this option is checked.

Click Here to Learn How to Check This Option

3. JavaScript MUST Be Enabled in Your Browser
ActiveBass uses JavaScript for music playback throughout the site, so it must be enabled.

Click Here to Check If JavaScript is Enabled

An alert box should appear. The value in the alert box should match the "Tempo" value at the bottom of this window.

• If the alert box does not appear, then JavaScript is not enabled. Netscape users can click here to learn how to enable JavaScript. For Internet Explorer users, JavaScript should be enabled by default.

• If the tempo in the alert box is 'null' or different than shown below, then you need to upgrade your browser.

4. Your Computer MUST Be Able to Play Local MIDI Files
When we say "local", we refer to a MIDI file located on your hard drive. If your computer cannot play a MIDI file from your hard drive, then it will not be able to play MIDI files from a website such as ActiveBass.

Download this MIDI file (Right-click on the link and choose 'Save Link/Target As')

Save it to your desktop, and then double-click on it. Your computer's local MIDI player should appear and it should begin playing.

• If you don't hear the music, then re-check your computer's master volume and MIDI volume. Make sure they're both turned up.

• If you don't still don't hear the music, the problem is with your computer's MIDI configuration, and beyond the scope of this help page. Common problems are MIDI drivers for your sound card that have not been installed correctly, or in the case of a Macintosh, there is no MIDI synth located on your computer. The most common MIDI synth for Macs is Quicktime Musical Instruments.

5. Netscape Users MAY Need to Set a MIME-Type for MIDI
In some cases, Netscape may not have any "helper" application for the MIME-type that ActiveBass uses for MIDI which is audio/midi:

Click Here to Find Out How To Associate the MIDI MIME-Type in Netscape

6. Your Browser MAY Require a Different MIDI Plug-In
ActiveBass is equipped with a MIDI plug-in auto-detection page:

Click Here to Auto-Detect Your MIDI Plug-In

Follow any recommendations given to you by this page, and then proceed to Step 7 below to test it out.

7. Re-Test ActiveBass MIDI Playback
Click the 'Play' button and listen:

• If you don't hear the music, then re-check your computer's master volume and MIDI volume. Make sure they're both turned up.

• If you still don't hear the music, then you may need to do something more drastic:
   - Re-install your web browser
   - If this doesn't work, re-install your operating system
If you're not computer-savvy, this is best handled by someone who is.

Yes, you certainly have a right to scoff at the notion that you may have to re-install your browser, or even your operating system to hear sound. However, for several visitors and members of ActiveBass, this was the only way to resolve the issue, and after they did, they were able to hear sound.

Remember: Web technology is not perfect. However, we have always been able to hear sound at ActiveBass using the operating system and browser configurations listed at the top of this page, as long as the system was clean. If you've installed and de-installed various software over time, your computer can function in a less than stable manner. Thus, it may be in a state that the only way to restore its health is to either re-install the browser, or re-install the operating system (preferably, the former).
